Frequently asked questions
In Ontario, a Psychologist holds a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) and is trained in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders using science-based therapy. We do not currently prescribe medication.
A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor (M.D.) who primarily manages mental health through medication and medical interventions.
While Psychiatry is covered by OHIP, Psychology services are typically covered through private insurance or out-of-pocket.
Both provide therapy. However, Psychologists in Ontario are authorized and trained to provide formal psychological diagnoses and perform specialized psychological testing/assessments.
Psychologists also typically have more extensive graduate-level training (usually 10+ years of university and supervised practice).
Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin building a foundation for our work together. I’ll ask about what’s bringing you in, your goals for therapy, your background, and how things are going in your day-to-day life. I invite you to ask questions as well! This time is to ensure you feel comfortable and supported.
The first 1-2 sessions are considered an "Intake Assessment." We will discuss your current concerns, personal history, and goals for therapy. This is also a time for you to see if you feel comfortable working with me. By the end of this phase, I will provide my initial impressions and we will collaborate on a treatment plan.
Therapy sessions are between 50-55 minutes long, allowing time to write your clinical session note. The frequency of our sessions will largely depend on your availability. Most clients begin with weekly sessions to build momentum and may then move to bi-weekly or monthly.
This varies based on your specific needs. Short-term therapy for a specific issue may last 6–12 sessions, while some folks may require longer-term support. We will review your progress regularly.
I have availability on weekdays, including time slots available in the morning, afternoon, and evening. I also have availability on some selected weekends.
My fees follow the guidelines recommended by the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA) and are currently $235 per 60 minute session.
I offer a limited number of sliding-scale spots to help make services more accessible. Sliding-scale rates are based on financial need and availability and can be discussed during our initial consultation. Please feel free to ask about the sliding scale.
Payment is due at the end of each session and can be made by e-transfer or credit card
No, psychological services in private practice are not covered by OHIP. Most extended health insurance plans (e.g., SunLife, Manulife, Canada Life) provide coverage for "Registered Psychologists."
I offer direct billing for several insurance providers (though not all). For companies that I am not able to bill directly, you will receive a detailed receipt after each session that you may submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.
